Derek & Sarah Scholls
Derek was born and raised here in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. God revealed himself to Derek when he was 18 and soon after that encounter, he was born again. God led Derek to a wonderful church called Calvary Chapel in McMinnville and soon after to a discipleship program in the same town called “The Great Commission School” where he lived for 2 years. Derek grew a lot during that time. He then spent a year at a street evangelism ministry in San Francisco called “SOS Ministries.” After that, the Lord led him to an outreach/discipleship ministry in Northern California called “The Prodigal Project.” Derek served on staff with the ministry’s discipleship program for eight years. In 2006, God brought him back to Oregon to take care of his aging grandmother in her final years. It was during this season that he went to nursing school, became an RN, got married to his wife Sarah, and became the father of three sons, Ezra, River, and Calvin. Derek recently moved his family from McMinnville to Corvallis to be a part of “The Hive” community. He works full time as a nurse. Derek’s heart’s desire for his family and church is that they would simply be who God desires for them to be and do what He desires for them to do. God has gifted Derek in the area of communicating His heart with others in simple ways through the context of everyday life.
Sarah grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico and became involved with missions while attending college. While having had encounters with God from a young age, it was in Honduras that God showed her that He wants a close relationship with His creation. Sarah continued serving on short term missions to the Philippines, Panama, and Mexico before moving to Oregon in 2002. During her first few years in Oregon, she completed her bachelor's degree in health with hopes of applying her learning to missions. She also graduated from the Berean School of the Bible; a year long study through the Bible with an outreach to San Francisco. Sarah also discipled teenagers in youth group at Calvary Chapel in Mcminnville. In 2006, she was invited to help a family move to Russia to plant a church; a four month commitment that turned into almost two years of ministry in Perm, Russia. After moving back to Oregon in 2008 to obtain her teaching license, she married Derek and has since taught in the public schools and for non-profit. Currently, she is busy about her little boys’ lives. She has a desire to see mothers receive the support they need to succeed in their relationship with God and others and to protect the most vulnerable in our culture.
Derek and Sarah are the girls house parents.
Adam grew up in Vincennes, Indiana, attending the local Free Methodist Church. Through that, he got involved in a program called Bible Quizzing where, at one of the National competitions, he met some of the folks who were involved in the Mandate. Eventually, he attended the Mandate and absolutely loved it! Upon graduation, he moved to Corvallis and began a construction company, specializing in flooring installation. Adam loves introducing people to the heart of the Father, calling out truth in people, and showing them their true identity in Jesus. He desires to see people abiding in the presence of the Father at all times and to make everything they do an act of worship to God.
Adam’s role in the school is administration, teaching, and dean of students.
Jake & Tammy Bumstead
Tammy grew up in the beautiful country of Northern California where she found Jesus when she was very young. After high school, she moved to McMinnville, Oregon to pursue Jesus at the Berean School of the Bible. It was here that her heart was drawn even closer to Him AND the beautiful Oregon landscape. After a year back in California she came back to Salem, Oregon to attend Corban University where she graduated with an elementary teaching license.
Throughout the years, she has traveled to 7 foreign countries to study and do medical and mission work. A goal in the future is do some long-term work overseas. Last, but not least, she not only found more of Jesus in Oregon, but she also found the love of her life; Jake Bumstead! They got married in 2011. They now live in Corvallis where they are both working; Tammy as a kindergarten teacher and Jake as a nurse.
Jake was a student in the school for 2 years and has now been part of the Mandate staff on and off over the last 10 years. The Mandate community, the family of people at the heart of the school, has been a major influence in his life challenging and shaping him. From choosing a career path in nursing to bringing him into relationship with his lovely bride, Mandate has been a common thread through it all. Happy to be part of the Mandate community that unites purpose and passion, Jake wants to see Jesus worshiped and lives given in service to one another with greater love and generosity.
Jake has a passion to see discipleship take place in the common, everyday aspects of everyone’s lives and to see rhythms of prayer and worship permeate who we are and what we do.
Jake and Tammy have served The Mandate School for many years and are the leaders of The Crossing Discipleship Program.
I am the 6th child in a family of thirteen. I was born and raised in Oregon, but a good deal of my life experiences have been cross-borders. I recently went through The Mandate and it was a very formative experience in my life. I began to see and understand the Lord in new ways and on deeper levels; especially as a Father. It was also a time of learning to understand and discover myself.
During The Mandate, I went to Zambia for missional outreach. I was really impressed by the humility and selflessness of the team. I learned to have higher value for people around me. I will be heading back there soon on a longer term visit.
I am passionate to see people cry out for and discover Jesus, to become close to the Father and have a passion for His heart. I want to see healthy relationships that both give and receive. I love to see brokenness restored. I desire to see people replace complacency with passion and purpose in life, and I want to walk with them.
Josiah serves as a Dean of The Mandate.
